Davis Cup: Alexander Zverev has to cancel the match against Hungary

The German team will have to do without Alexander Zverev for a short time in the Davis Cup game against Hungary. The 26-year-old is still suffering from an infection that weakened him in his semi-final match at the Australian Open against Daniil Medvedev.

“We hoped until the end that Alexander could support us against Hungary after his strong performances in Australia. Unfortunately there wasn't enough time for him to get fit in time. Now we have to stand together as a team to compensate for the loss. Even though the Hungarians have a very strong team, I am convinced that with our unity we can survive here even without him,” said Davis Cup team boss Michael Kohlmann.

Maximilian Marterer is replacing Zverev again. The 28-year-old had already stepped in against Bosnia-Herzegovina in September 2023 when Zverev had to miss due to a muscle injury and won his first win for Germany there. The man from Nuremberg, who is currently ranked 92nd in the ATP world rankings, will strengthen the team around Jan-Lennard Struff, Dominik Koepfer, Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz against Hungary.

“After his opening defeat at the ATP tournament in Montpellier yesterday, Maximilian was immediately ready to step in. “He has already proven against Bosnia-Herzegovina that we can rely on him and that he can score for Germany,” said Kohlmann.
