In his opening match against Alexei Popyrin, Alexander Zverev did not allow his opponent a single breakball - the German made his first serve against David Ferrer. And had to fend off three more breakballs at 0: 3. Zverev made the connection but immediately put the rebreak on it. The first set had to be decided in the tie-break, Zverev dominated it from the start and won the short decision after 56 minutes.

The match, actually scheduled for 10 p.m., could only be started one and a half hours late due to the marathon between Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios. The matter remained sweaty. In the second set, the German number one started with more momentum, this time it was Zverev who made the first break. The four-time Acapulco champion Ferrer was now increasingly on the defensive and was athletically inferior to his opponent. And should only win one game at his last appearance in Mexico.

Zverev now against Alex de Minaur

In the quarterfinals (Friday, not before 1:30 a.m.CET, live on Sky and in our match tracker), an Australian is again waiting with Alex de Minaur. Zverev played three times against de Minuar in 2018, only had problems when they first met in the Davis Cup in Brisbane. Alexander Zverev won easily in both Washington and Shanghai.

Before that, tournament favorite Rafael Nadal was eliminated: despite three match balls, the Spaniard lost to Nick Kyrgios in three sets.
