Murray had recently been absent due to lumbar problems and had to cancel his participation in the ATP tournaments in Cologne. He is currently back in training, but participating in the last regular ATP tournament in Sofia is out of the question , as reported to PA News Agency from the Murray camp . Instead, he wants to prepare for the coming season.

The Scot should travel to Australia in mid-December to follow the quarantine regulations that apply there.

However, it is still unclear where and how exactly the 33-year-old will take part in the season opening. He is not qualified for the ATP Cup if Dan Evans (31st), Kyle Edmund (47th) or Cameron Norrie (70th), who were listed before him, express their interest; Murray is currently only 118th in the world. Accordingly, he would probably also need a wildcard for the Australian Open, unless some players, similar to the US Open, refrain from participating in Melbourne for security reasons.

At the Australian Open 2018, Murray actually ended his career more or less because of persistent hip problems, but after a successful operation he returned first in doubles and then also in singles.
