Angelique Kerber doesn't get bored during her baby break

Angelique Kerber is very busy these days. Playing tournament tennis is not possible right now, after all, Kerber is pregnant. But otherwise: the three-time Grand Slam winner is very present. Big interviews, a visit to the ZDF morning show, advertising campaigns for the sunscreen that she is launching together with national soccer goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The stylist is always there.

And now, on Thursday in the Cafe Reitschule in the English Garden in Munich: the presentation of her biography entitled "A Question of Will". A biography that should be a kind of life help. The title of her book, she says in a relaxed conversation, "fits me personally". She herself, explains Kerber (34), first had to tease out this will "that I have had in me over the years".

Do it right - or don't do it at all

The teasing out took place in 2011: Still no tournament victory, but eleven first-round defeats. Kerber, who has been on the tour for eight years, thought about quitting. She spent a few weeks introspecting to find out what was going on, then it was clear: I want to be successful in the sport "that I love, I want to be number one". And she realized: I have to change for that.

"Before 2011 I was a completely different player, also a completely different person. I just wanted to play, I didn't want to train. But I noticed that it wasn't enough to get where I wanted to be," says Kerber. Your consequence: Do it right - or not at all. The training became more extensive and harder, the attitude to sport and work more professional, more goal-oriented.

"The greatest success of my career"

The great success came after seven tournament victories between 2012 and 2015 in 2016: first Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open, a second at the US Open - plus Olympic silver and first place in the world rankings. But she wasn't prepared for the resounding success, and she too realized: "It's easier to become number one than to stay up there."

The year 2017 was correspondingly disappointing, "everything was different there," reports Kerber. "You don't want to believe what's happening. You try to keep doing your thing even though you know something has to change." The messed up year was also an instructive one. And so the will to be successful won again. Then in the summer of 2018: "The greatest success of my career", the victory in Wimbledon.

Clear plan for completion of career

The book about her career, says Kerber, should be an incentive for her fans, actually for everyone: "For me it's important to get a message across", the message to "always believe in yourself", to live your dreams. Dreams that she still has herself. The biggest: she definitely wants to be there at the 2024 Olympics. And, mind you: "This shouldn't be my last tournament."

First of all, Kerber wants to return to the tour as soon as possible after the birth of her child in March or April next year, to get back to a level that guarantees success as quickly as possible. She knows it will be "a challenge, but I love a challenge." Until then, Kerber will continue to play tennis. At her academy in Poland. To stay fit.
