John Isner is the only professional tennis player to break the 500 tie-break barrier

At first glance, John Isner's quarter-final win over Emilio Gomez (Ecuador) at the ATP hard-court tournament in Dallas was one of the 37-year-old American's many match wins. 7:6 (8), 7:5 was the final score after almost 1:48 hours of play. On closer inspection, however, the game brought a new record for the American - namely the first set.

Isner got this, as can easily be seen from the result, in the short decision with 10:8 and thus won the almost unbelievable 500th tiebreak of his career. Needless to say, the towering serve gunner is the sole record holder in this statistic. In second and third place are Roger Federer (466 tie-break successes), who have already retired, and Ivo Karlovic (398) - the Croatian, by the way, with an overall negative record of 403 lost short decisions.

Also in a class of its own when it comes to beaten aces

Isner joked about Gomez after the success: "I'm glad I didn't have to win the 501st as well." The man from North Carolina managed the only break of the game in the last game. Incidentally, the US player won tie-break 501 in the semifinals that followed against compatriot JJ Wolf, when he won the final ticket 3:6, 7:5, 7:6 (4).

By the way, Isner also leads in another impressive statistic - with 14,039 aces he has peppered the most unreturnable serves of all tennis pros into the opposing court.
