Richard Gasquet had a pleasant working day in Auckland on Friday. Even if the French veteran would certainly have preferred to win in a different way than with a walkover because his compatriot Constant Lestienne could not compete in the semifinals of the ATP Tour 250 tournament. But the 36-year-old Gasquet is in the final. And is aiming for his 16th title on the tour.
However, that will not be easy. Because in the final, Cameron Norrie is a man who has not yet lost a match in the 2023 season. The 27-year-old left-hander beat Taylor Fritz, Rafael Nadal and Alex de Minaur in the United Cup. And followed up with three more successes in Auckland. The youngest was a sovereign 6: 4 and 6: 3 in the semifinals against Jenson Brooksby. Norrie is in contention for his fifth title, his last came in Lyon last year. In Auckland, the Briton was already in the final in 2019.
Also worth noting is the fact that the encounter between Gasquet and Norrie will be a first.
