At first glance, one would have assumed that the first day of the Swiss Indoors could come to an end quite soon. Three singles from 3:00 p.m. is not a program that prompts viewers to schedule a shortened night's sleep. But what the Swiss audience should have done on Monday.

Because those who want to get the most out of their tickets on Monday were still sitting in Basel's St. Jakobshalle well after midnight. And saw a big fight between Arthur Rinderknech and the tournament's number four, Marin Cilic. Which should ultimately last until almost exactly 1:00 a.m.

Rinderknech with big fight

The French Rinderknech should finally have the better end for himself, the 27-year-old fended off two match balls at a score of 4: 5 in the decisive set on Cilic's serve, only to use the third in the tie-break. A fierce performance that certainly deserves more audience.

Because although the St. Jakobshalle was already almost completely full on Monday - and the atmosphere was particularly enchanting when Jack Draper and Carlos Alcaraz met - a number of Swiss made their way home before the last individual of the day. Also because Rinderknech and Cilic were only able to start around 11 p.m.

Dense program on Tuesday

There are probably two reasons for the jumbled schedule: the duration of the matches (no single match that day was decided in two sentences), but also the surprisingly generous opening ceremony, in which the audience saw a concert by Alvaro Soler, but it was didn't see tennis for almost two hours.

It could also be evening in Basel this Tuesday. Because: With the same starting time, there are four individuals scheduled for the second day of the Swiss Indoors. Including two highlights from a Swiss perspective: the duel between youngster Dominic Stricker and American Maxime Cressy. And the first round cracker between Stan Wawrinka and Casper Ruud.
