Bernard Tomic is calling for the attack - at least verbally - while the corresponding results are still a long way off.

A sloppy genius with a family background from hell - Bernard Tomic has never been able to keep his promise of a brilliant career since he turned professional in 2008 at the tender age of 16. In mid-December, the Australian was back with big announcements : "I think I can get in the top 10". The best ranking so far for the now 29-year-old was 17th place at the beginning of 2016.
Six years later, the enfant terrible is only in world ranking position 257. In its last three competition appearances in September of the previous year - each on the ATP Challenger Tour - it each had very clear first-round defeats. But now everything should be different, the "sins of youth" are forgotten, the mindset is designed for the really big coup - at least as far as the verbal announcements are concerned.
"Before I retire, I'll make it"
The first big step should have been taken at the Australian Open, at least reaching the main draw was an expected goal. A Corna infection and a straight two-set defeat at the start of the qualification later, the Stuttgart-born right-hander remains offensively optimistic.
In any case, as part of the "Happy Slam", Tomic let his fans know the following: "I can win Wimbledon, we all know that, I know that. On grass I'm probably one of the ten best players in the world. Before I retire, I will I can do it, that's for sure." Great tones from the former child prodigy - now "only" the results are needed.
