As great as the hopes of Austrian tennis fans were after Dominic Thiem 's first-round appearance at the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires, the disillusionment was just two days later. The 2020 US Open winner was surprisingly beaten by Juan Pablo Varillas 4: 6 and 4: 6 and was never able to match the performance against Alex Molcan.

"I'm very disappointed with my defeat, especially because I played a very good first round on Tuesday, where there were some positive aspects," said Thiem after the round of 16. He also felt good in training in the days in Buenos Aires. "However, yesterday didn't start well at all, I didn't get into the game at all and Varillas got off to a good start."

Thiem was self-critical, especially given the weak start - Varillas won five of the first six games. "I just have to start the match more concentrated. I fought, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to turn the game around anymore. In terms of the shots, there were too many mistakes that simply shouldn't happen," complained the 29-year-old year olds.

"Nevertheless, I'm trying to forget the match quickly," said the world number 99. Next week Thiem will start at the ATP 500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro. He hopes for a few good training sessions and improvements in his game, says the Lower Austrian. "I'll probably play doubles too, so I can improve my return and first ball after serve."
