ATP: Carlos Alcaraz is almost number one at the end of the year

Carlos Alcaraz should end the tennis year 2022 as number one in the tennis world. Only Rafael Nadal could still catch up with his compatriot. But that seems unlikely at the moment.

Yes, Rafael Nadal can still win the ATP Finals 2022 in Turin under very specific conditions. Namely, when Taylor Fritz wins his remaining matches against Casper Ruud and Félix Auger-Aliassime in two sets. And Nadal himself wins very smoothly against Ruud on Thursday. Then the Spaniard, Auger-Aliassime and Ruud would each have a win and two sets won, the number of games won would decide. About getting into the semi-finals, mind you.

According to the previous impressions of the matches in Turin, this is not very likely. Although Rafael Nadal had missed a few chances in his second game against "FAA" in the first set, in the end he had no real chance of winning at 3: 6 and 4: 6. A victory was also needed for Nadal to intercept Carlos Alcaraz, who was injured in Turin, in the annual ranking and end the year as number one in the world.

Before the start of the tournament in Turin, there was a third candidate in addition to Nadal and Alcaraz: Stefanos Tsitsipas. However, he should have dusted off all 1,500 points to be awarded and therefore had to win the unofficial ATP World Championship 2022 undefeated. After Tsitsipas' opening defeat against Novak Djokovic, this option is no longer an option.
