The signs were not favorable for the organizers of the Houston ATP Tour 250 event when Casper Ruud had the physio come onto the court in the second set of the final to have his left hip treated. Ruud pulled off the final against Carlos Alcaraz neatly, with the Spaniard having the better end. But that the Norwegian would actually open in Houston just a few days later seemed rather unlikely on Sunday.
And so, at the only clay court tournament in the USA, local hero Michael Mmoh was able to not only move up for Ruud as a lucky loser, but also to take his bye with him. Mmoh is one of 16 (!) Americans who are noted in the 28 roster.
For Casper Ruud, on the other hand, there is now a recovery window that the seventh in the world rankings can really use. Because the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo is coming up next week, followed by the 500 in Barcelona, after which Ruud decided to start in Munich. An extremely tight program for the 23-year-old, who had to miss the Australian Open this year due to an injury. In Buenos Aires, however, he has already celebrated a tournament victory. The seventh of his career.
