There was nothing for Gerald Melzer: In the final of the $53,120 clay court challenger event in Bogota (Colombia), the Austrian, who was seeded five, lost to Argentinian number two of the tournament Juan Pablo Ficovich after just 66 minutes of play clearly with 1:6, 2:6. Overall, the 31-year-old from Deutsch-Wagram only won 35 percent of the points played.
Nevertheless, the younger of the two Melzer brothers is making a big leap forward in the ATP ranking and will improve by 45 ranks to position 202. He is the current number four in Austrian men's tennis behind Jurij Rodionov, Dennis Novak and Filip Misolic. Melzer was registered for the ATP Challenger in Iasi, Romania, for the coming week, but withdrew his entry for personal reasons.
