Top favorite Quentin Halys (ATP 78) started his title mission against Belgian Michael Geerts (ATP 267) on Center Court. In a balanced initial phase without any loss of service, the 25-year-old Frenchman had to fend off a total of three set balls in the tie-break of the first set before he used all his experience on the carpet in his fifth tournament participation in a 7: 6, 6: 4 success after 1:16 hours could convert playing time.
Following the match, Halys commented: " It was very difficult for me because my opponent served incredibly well and I had to save several set points in the first round. I tried to stay focused and take the few chances I had. Of course I'm very happy that I was able to clear the opening hurdle. I love playing on fast courses, which is why I always enjoy coming here to Ismaning.”
In the next round, last year's semi-finalist meets the Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan (ATP 274), who defeated the British Billy Harris (ATP 295) 7: 6, 6: 7 and 7: 6 in a dramatic match without breaks.
Bachinger with a big fight
Local hero Matthias Bachinger (ATP 436) delivered a spectacular main draw fight after successful qualification against Brazilian Gabriel Decamps (ATP 276). At the beginning, the 23-year-old from Sao Paulo dominated with his aggressive groundstrokes and didn't give up a game in the opening set. The tide turned at the start of the second set and the 35-year-old from Munich was able to equalize the set. In a balanced decision set, with chances for both sides, Decamps had the better end with 6:0, 1:6, 6:4 after almost two hours. In the round of 16, the former college player faces Polish qualifier Kacper Zuk (ATP 269), who defeated No. 8 seeded Frenchman Antoine Escoffier (ATP 211) in three sets.
Topo loses to former junior grand slam champion
The spectators in Ismaning were excited about the appearance of Marko Topo (ATP 463) from MTTC Iphitos Munich, who was able to play his way into the main draw this year at the BMW Open by American Express and the Hamburg European Open via the qualification. The 19-year-old Gräfelfinger with Serbian roots challenged JonasForejtek (ATP 238), who won the junior competition at the US Open in 2019. The Czech had the better start and was able to easily win the first round. Cheered on by the home audience, the 19-year-old Topo improved and, in addition to equalizing the sentence, was also able to claim the early break in the decisive sentence. The teenager then had to pay tribute to his strenuous race to catch up and congratulate his 21-year-old opponent with 2:6, 6:3, 2:6 on making it into the round of 16.
Lenz and Moraing lose
After successfully qualifying, Julian Lenz (ATP 440) from Giessen met Nerman Fatic (ATP 199) in his fourth participation in the main draw of the WOLFFKRAN OPEN. The 27-year-old from Bosnia and Herzegovina secured the first round with a break in the 12th game. In the middle of the second set, 29-year-old Lenz lost his service game again and lost after 78 minutes 5:7, 3:6. In the next round, No. 7 seeded Fatic meets young Brit Alastair Gray (ATP 289).
Mats Moraing (ATP 248) still has to wait for his first match win in Ismaning. In his third tournament participation, the 30-year-old from Mülheim got off to a weak start in the match against Vitaliy Sachko (ATP 312) and was quickly 0:4 behind. The match then turned out to be more balanced, but the Ukrainian set the course for a 6:2, 6:4 win in just under an hour with a break in the middle of the second set. In the round of 16, the 25-year-old meets tennis base professional Daniel Masur (ATP 185), who is number 5 seeded.
Yunchaokete on the road to success
A young player from the Middle Kingdom has been impressive since the start of the tournament. In qualifying, 20-year-old Bu Yunchaokete (ATP 346) knocked out the 2019 Ismaning champion with Slovak Lukas Lacko (ATP 499) and went on to defeat Khumoyun Sultanov (ATP 444) of Uzbekistan. At the start of the main round, the 20-year-old, who has already won six titles on the ITF Men's World Tennis Tour this year, met Benjamin Hassan (ATP 303), who is now starting for Lebanon. The Chinese was able to take the service from Hassan, who was born in Merzig, twice without allowing a single break chance and triumphed 7:6, 6:2 in 1:24 hours of play. The Kazakh Denis Yevseyev (ATP 278) is waiting in the next round, who defeated the No. 4 of the tournament yesterday with the Austrian DennisNovak (ATP 145).
