Tuesday in Cincinnati didn't go badly from an American point of view: First, Taylor Fritz, already champion in Indian Wells this year, beat Sebastian Baez 6-1 and 6-1. Then youngster Ben Shelton followed suit and beat Lorenzo Sonego 7: 6 (5), 3: 6 and 7: 5. The reward for Shelton is a meeting with Casper Ruud, Fritz can now play against Nick Kyrgios.
Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz are already one lap further. The Russian, seeded in first place, also won the third game against Botic van de Zandschulp, this time 6:4 and 7:5. In the round of 16, the world number one plays either against Denis Shapovalov or local hero Tommy Paul. Alcaraz, on the other hand, gave Mackenzie McDonald no chance at 6: 3 and 6: 2. The next task against Marin Cilic will be much more demanding.
Rafael Nadal, second in Cincinnati, will start the competition on Wednesday night (live on Sky from 1 a.m.). Nadal, who opens against Borna Coric, has a chance to climb back to the top of the world rankings if he wins the tournament. However, Daniil Meevedev would have to lose in his upcoming match.
