Stefanos Tsitsipas had probably imagined the start of the weeks in New York like this: After an impressive performance over long stretches, the Greek beat the two-time Grand Slam finalist Kevin Anderson 6-1 and 6-3 - and qualified thus as the first player for the round of 16.
"The fact that I remained aggressive with my service and my basic strokes helped me a lot. The first set was excellent," said Tsitsipas, who now meets John Isner or John Millman, after the game.
Shortly after the world number six, David Goffin, another seeded player bought his ticket for the third round. The Belgian prevailed in an intense duel against Borna Coric 7: 6 (6) and 6: 4 and took his fifth win in the fifth match against the Croatian. The 29-year-old will face Denis Shapovalov or Jan-Lennard Struff in the round of 16.
Previously, Grigor Dimitrov and Karen Khachanov, among others, had already asserted themselves on Sunday - but still in first-round encounters . On Monday, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev will also intervene in the tournament.
