Marcos Giron is fundamentally not to blame. After all, the 29-year-old American works as a tennis professional, so it's his job to win matches on the ATP tour. And that's exactly what Giron did on Wednesday in Delray Beach. He sent Matija Pecotic back to the desk with 6: 3 and 6: 3. Pecotic, who is only tinkering through the tennis tour as a part-time professional, defeated Jack Sock in round one after qualifying. Actually works as a finance manager in a US company.
It was therefore already the second beautiful story that Giron ended in Delray Beach. At the start, Ben Shelton, the surprise quarter-finalist of the Australian Open 2023, had to believe it. Marcos Giron now meets Miomir Kecmanovic.
Fritz only in action today
Things are still not going well for Denis Shapovalov, who was beaten by Michael Mmoh 5:7, 6:3 and 3:6. Like last week in Dallas, where Shapovalov was eliminated by eventual tournament winner Yibing Wu, Delray Beach wasn't even able to win a match.
Tournament favorite Taylor Fritz only intervened in the game today. The US number one opens against Emilio Gomez.
