From a sporting point of view, the tennis year 2022 was rather mediocre for Diego Schwartzman . What has not left the Argentine without a trace.

Two finals in the first three months of the year, that was something to be proud of for Diego Schwartzman. Especially since the opponents in Buenos Aires (Casper Ruud) and Rio de Janeiro (Carlos Alcaraz) are of the caliber against which it is no shame to lose. After that, however, not much happened. Most recently, it was in the Davis Cup against Mikael Ymer and thus Sweden in Bologna, then in the Laver Cup against Stefanos Tsitsipas and finally in Tel Aviv against Arthur Rinderknech, some of which were hearty defeats.

Nevertheless, the Argentine is still in 18th position in the ATP charts. "You reach the semifinals of Roland Garros and then the quarterfinals of an ATP 500 - and you ask yourself: Is that good or bad?" Schwartzman said Radio station Urbana Play. "I started the year as number 14, now I'm 18. And I'm like, what a shitty year."

Schwartzman in Antwerp this week

"I've had a few panic attacks this year," Schwartzman continued. “Tennis challenges that a bit. It is best to set short-term goals. If I had been told when I was 17 what I would achieve, I would have signed immediately. But once you get into the business, it's hard to stop that rhythm."

Schwartzman will play in Antwerp next week and, as number three after a bye, will definitely meet a local hero: either David Goffin or Gilles Arnaud Bailly. "I started therapy this year that addresses all of the issues in my life, not just the ones on the court." Schwartzman said he just felt like he needed outside help.
