So Casper Ruud needed to return to his favorite surface, sand, to get back on track on the 2023 ATP tour. The Norwegian has played a concentrated tournament at Estoril's ATP 250 event so far and is in the final after a narrow three-set win over Frenchman Quentin Halys. Halys surprisingly defeated Dominic Thiem in two sets in the quarterfinals.
Ruud found it difficult against the strong Frenchman despite winning the opening set, an early break in the second round was enough for Halys to send the match into a deciding set. There were no breaks in this one, but numerous dangerous situations on both sides. A tiebreak was the logical consequence. In this Halys acted a bit too prone to errors, the Frenchman should not recover from a quick 1:4 deficit.
In the final, top seeded Casper Ruud will now face Miomir Kecmanovic, who has been in impressive shape so far in Estoril. In the semifinals, too, the Serb didn't miss a beat and secured his ticket for the final.
