The first semi-final of the ATP Finals 2022 has been set since last night: Talyor Fritz will challenge Novak Djokovic to a duel. While the American is taking part in the unofficial men's world championships for the first time this year, the Serb can already look back on five titles at the season-ending tournament - although the Belgrade's last triumph was seven years ago.
If it comes to the experience and the performances shown so far in northern Italy, the 21-time Grand Slam champion should be the big favorite in the semifinals. One statistic in particular, however, could give the 25-year-old Californian a healthy dose of confidence. If Fritz had reached the semi-finals of a tournament this year, the title always followed.
"It's a huge opportunity for me"
At last night's press conference, Paul Annacone's protégé rightly spoke of an impressive performance: "It's a big part of the strong year I've had." But it is also important to keep the focus, so he does not want to think too much about this issue.
The previous five duels between Fritz and Djokovic have all gone to the South Slavs - only at the Australian Open 2021 was the North American able to take two sentences from the former number one. Still: "It's a huge opportunity for me. I'm really looking forward to playing against Novak. He's one of the best, if not the best."
Here is the single draw from Turin.
