Dominic Thiem has to wait for his first sense of achievement in 2022. He also failed to win his sixth game. Marco Cecchinato prevailed 6:3 and 6:4.
Most recently, Thiem and Cecchinato faced each other in the semifinals of Roland Garros in 2018. A match that the Austrian had under control (7: 5, 7: 6, 6: 1). There were also meetings before that - in 2013 and 2014. Thiem won once, Cecchinato once.
Cecchinato manages to break 4: 2 in the first set
In Geneva it was an intense clay court match right from the start, in which the Italian initially had the better cards. The Italian played a strong first set and never gave up the break advantage. Round one went to him 6:3.
Thiem: Crazy tweeners - no breaks
Dominic Thiem had various break opportunities at the beginning of the second set, but was unable to set the decisive trick. It certainly wasn't the attitude. He fought for every point and played two tweeners in a service game by Cecchinato - only to have to give up his serve again afterwards.
Marco Cecchinato will meet Kamil Majchrzak in the next round, who defeated Alexander Bublik in three sets.
