So it comes to the long-awaited duel between Dominic Thiem and the number one of the tournament, the ninth in the world rankings Andrey Rublev. This followed Thiem on Friday afternoon with a two-set win over the American Tommy Paul, which was safe for a long time. The Austrian had previously also clearly had the upper hand in two sets against number four in the tableau, Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo. It's the second ATP semi-final of the season for Thiem.

Andrey Rublev, on the other hand, has already won title honors three times this season at ATP level. The Russian triumphed in Marseille, Dubai and Belgrade. The date of the last title win of the world number ninth is already from the clay court season, when the 25-year-old Novak Djokovic surprised at the ATP 250 event in his hometown of Belgrade. Last week Rublev narrowly failed in the semi-finals in Astana.

Bitter end for Carreno Busta

In any case, the 25-year-old underlined his title ambitions in Gijon against Tommy Paul. In the final phase of the first set, the ninth in the world rankings took advantage of a short phase of weakness from the server Paul and set the score 7-5 to 1-0. The second round was easier for the tournament favorite, Rublev certainly had the upper hand 6:3 and bought his ticket for the semi-finals after almost an hour and a half.

Arthur Rinderknech is also surprisingly in the semi-finals. The Frenchman had a memorable battle with tournament number two, local hero Pablo Carreno Busta. And after defending a whopping nine match balls, he had the better end for himself. The result in numbers: 4:6, 6:3 and 7:6 (16!). The Frenchman is now waiting for the winner in the duel between Andy Murray and Sebastian Korda.
