It is not surprising that the jurors agreed on Holger Rune as the best newcomer on the ATP tour. Although: Actually, the Dane was already present last year, but Rune's ranking suffered from the regulations that were introduced due to the corona pandemic, despite considerable success. And so the teenager started the year in Adelaide as number 103 in the world - and immediately achieved something amazing: because Rune lost to Corentin Moutet in both editions of the tournament.
Three more first-round bankruptcies followed at the Australian Open, in Cordoba and in Buenos Aires. It got really crazy at the beginning of April: Holger Rune won the ATP Challenger tournament in Sanremo in the final against Francesco Passaro and just a few hours later in Monte Carlo qualified against Radu Albot. And won.
Rune with four finals in a row
The first big highlight was the ATP Tour 250 event in Munich, where Rune also defeated Alexander Zverev on the way to the title. In Roland Garros, the youngster made it to the quarter-finals by beating Stefanos Tsitsipas, and at least made it to round three of the US Open.
In autumn, Rune then had an incredible series of four finals in a row: defeats in Sofia (against Marc-Andrea Huesler) and Basel (against Félix Auger-Aliassime), in Stockholm (against Stefanos Tsitsipas) and Paris-Bercy (against Novak Djokovic) was followed by titles two and three. What Holger Rune even brought in the role of the first substitute for the ATP Finals in Turin.
Rune was enthusiastic about his award: "It means a lot to me. I've worked very hard all year to do as well as possible. And it's really nice to see that my colleagues voted for me. I can hardly Waiting for 2023, hopefully it will be another great year for me."
