Step by step, Germany's number one Alexander Zverev manages to regain his old strength. Even if Indian Wells tournament director Tommy Haas attests him a certain gap to the absolute top of the world, the 44-year-old is also sure that the ATP Finals champion of 2018 and 2021 will soon be back at the highest level of play.
For Haas, the first of the two Sunshine Double events in the USA comes a little too early in the development process of the 25-year-old from Hamburg. Even if Zverev was able to advance to the semi-finals at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Dubai (and failed there in two sets against the Russian Andrey Rublev), the former world number two is still missing the big victories against real Kapazunder.
"Very solid first lap for me"
As already reported , Daniil Medvedev could face a real endurance test in the round of 16 of the highly endowed Combined event in the US state of California, but before that the German would like to remove the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori from the tournament grid. However: The Scandinavians won the only duel between the two in three sets in the second round in Miami in 2021.

Zverev himself was quite satisfied with his opening performance against Argentinian Pedro Cachin, as he told the German press after the clear 6: 3, 6: 1 win: "It was a very solid first round for me. I'm happy with the level I played." Although the conditions were completely different than expected, the DTB player saw the match at a very high level.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion will definitely have to find this again against Ruusuvuori in order to be able to succeed. The second duel after 8 p.m. (CET) on the Center Court of Tennis Paradise will show whether the consistency is back again.
Here the single tableau from Indian Wells.
