After his creative break, Dominic Thiem now has two tournaments on clay in his bones, with mixed results. He won three matches in Madrid before losing to Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. In Rome, the round of 16 against Lorenzo Sonego ended, with 5: 7 in the tie-break of the third set as close as possible .
The result: Thiem will also compete in Lyon to gain more match practice before the Grand Slam tournament in Paris, and the first opponent is now clear: Cameron Norrie, who won against Corentin Moutet 7: 5, 6: 3. Thiem has a bye in round 1.
Thiem has fond memories of the leftie Norrie, currently 49th in the world rankings: He won the only game of the two to date in Acapulco (on hard court), but it was very close with 6: 3, 5: 7 and 7: 5.
Thiem opponent Norrie: In Estoril in the final
And it will not be a sure-fire success in Lyon either, because Norrie recently had good results: In Barcelona he made it to the quarter-finals (defeat against Rafael Nadal), in Estoril even to the final, where he was defeated by Albert Ramos. In Rome, Norrie survived the qualification and came in the main draw up to round 2.
Thiem is at the top in Lyon, ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek is also at the start via wildcard.
