It remains to be seen whether Daniil Medvedev will suddenly become a clay court lover after the twelve days of the tournament in the Caja Magica. The Russian, who has already won four tournaments this year, is definitely in the round of 16 of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid. But he had to fight hard for it: Alexander Shevchenko, Günter Bresnik's protégé, kept the game open until the end before Medvedev was able to prevail 4: 6, 6: 1 and 7: 5.
Shevchenko can still be satisfied with his performance in Madrid. After all, he had only made it into the main draw after qualifying, then first won against JJ Wolf and in round two against Jiri Lehecka. Shevchenko will reach a new career high in the ATP world rankings with 91st place.
For Daniil Medvedev it is now either against Alex de Minaur or another compatriot, namely Aslan Karatsev, in the Spanish capital.
