Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff also won his opening match after qualifying at the ATP Masters in Monte Carlo. The 32-year-old from Warstein prevailed against the Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas 6: 4 and 6: 3 and continues to show improving form. Struff used his third match point. In the second round he meets Andy Murray (Great Britain) or Alex de Minaur (Australia).
In addition to Struff, Alexander Zverev is the second German tennis professional in the main field of the clay court tournament, which is endowed with 6.2 million euros. The Hamburger starts on Tuesday with his first round duel against Alexander Bublik (Kazakhstan). In his adopted country, Zverev (25) hopes to continue the form of the 2022 clay court season, which ended in the semifinals of the French Open against Rafael Nadal with a serious ankle injury.
After his comeback, Zverev has not yet regained momentum, most recently he was eliminated in his opening match in Miami. The top seed in Monte Carlo is the 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia), the defending champion is the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nadal (Spain) remains absent after suffering a hip injury.
