Andrey Rublev actually got off to a good start in his round of 16 duel with Jannik Sinner: The Russian made the first break of the game in the Italian's first service game, which the seventh in the world rankings was able to transport to 5: 3 with relative ease. But Sinner managed the rebreak on the last impression and made set one exciting again. The upswing for the South Tyrolean was only to be short-lived: Rublev immediately grabbed the break advantage again, which the Russian was finally able to transport after one of the Italian's numerous forehand errors to win the set 7: 5. The Russian clearly had the upper hand and also made the early break to make it 1-0 at the start of the second round.

Jannik Sinner didn't want to give up that quickly. The sticking point in this match? Possibly a 26-stroke rally with a score of 1:0 30:30 for Rublev, which Sinner finished with a stop worth seeing and managed the rebreak a little later. From then on there was nothing to grow against this South Tyrolean, Sinner played wonderful attacking tennis and Andrey Rublev literally hit the wall: Six wins in a row for the Italian led to a decisive set after a 6:1.

Sinner in the quarterfinals against Zverev

Sinner also took the run with him in the third round, where he got the early break to make it 2-1, but Rublev immediately equalized, which he celebrated energetically. But it was only a short setback for Sinner, who continued to hit everything, made another break to make it 3:2 and then one more to win the match, which he fixed along the line with a humorless backhand return.

Now it's up to Sinner against Alexander Zverev. He had already won confidently against Pablo Carreno Busta in the afternoon.

Hubert Hurkacz also made it into the last eight. With his success over Albert Ramos Vinolas, the Pole has already won three times as many games on clay court in 2022 as in the previous year. In the quarterfinals, Hurkacz meets Grigor Dimitrov, who managed a surprise against Casper Ruud in the morning. Taylor Fritz, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Stefanos Tstisipas and Diego Schwartzman also made it to the last eight.
