Jannik Sinner made a big statement at the start of the European clay court season. The reigning Australian Open champion celebrated a confident 6:1 and 6:2 victory over the American Sebastian Korda at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo.
Sinner, who has only suffered one defeat this season (against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of Indian Wells), underlined his ambitions on clay courts. The 22-year-old has a good chance of displacing Novak Djokovic from the top of the world rankings in the coming weeks. In the round of 16, the Italian will face the German Jan-Lennard Struff.
Sonego takes advantage of second chance
Sinner's compatriot Lorenzo Sonego also advanced to the round of 16 on Wednesday. The 28-year-old lucky loser, who had slipped into the main draw for the injured Alcaraz, beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6:4 and 7:5. Karen Khachanov also won against Francisco Cerundolo in three sets.
