There are always miracles and a small one just happened at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. Viennese Sam Weissborn and his partner Romain Arneodo from Monaco are in the doubles quarter-finals of the well-paid clay court event - thanks to a sensationally clear 6:2, 6:3 win over Rajeev Ram (USA, second seeded in the Principality). ) and Joe Salisbury.
Weissborn had entered the main draw with the local hero Arneodo via wildcard - the two also clearly beat Marcelo Melo from Brazil, who had competed with German top individual player Alexander Zverev, 6: 2, 6: 4 in round one. Now the next big challenge awaits with the sixth-ranked duo Lloyd Glasspool (Great Britain) / Harri Heliovaara (Finland).
The 31-year-old Austrian was already 77th in the double ranking in 2017. In the current season, Weissborn/Arneodo, who have been standard partners since autumn last year, have won an ATP Challenger tournament in Belgium and reached the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Marseille.
