Stefanos Tsitsipas remains the man to beat in Monte Carlo. And who, like 2021, was unbeatable. The man from Athens beat surprise man Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6: 3 and 7: 6 (3) in the final and thus celebrated his eighth tournament victory on the ATP tour.
The outsider got off to a better start in his first ATP final and took a 2-1 lead with a break. Tsitsipas immediately hit back - to zero.
And from then on took command: After 31 minutes, the defending champion had won the first set 6:3.
And Stefanos Tsitsipas immediately followed in front of Prince Albert and Formula 1 ace Charles Leclerc, opening the second set with a break. Davidovich Fokina didn't let himself down, now it was he who made the break equalizer to make it 2-2. In the ninth game, Tsitsipas initially created two break chances. Davidovich Fokina parried. On the third, a forehand from the Spaniard sailed wide. A few moments later Tsitsipa's serve was 15:40, Davidovich Fokina equalized with a smash at the second chance.
Tsitsipas wins in the tiebreak
At a score of 6: 5, Davidovich Fokina was only two points away from equalizing the set, Tsitsipas kept his nerve. A tiebreak had to make the decision. And that's where Stefanos Tsitsipas showed himself to be the better server. The sides were switched at 5: 1, and Tsitsipas could no longer take this advantage. After 1:34 the triumph of the number five in the world was certain.
Both players will continue in Barcelona next week. Davidovic Fokina will then open against a qualifier, Tsitsipas, number one of the tournament, awaits the winner of the match between Ilya Ivashka and Pedro Martinez. Last year, Tsitsipas only lost in the final against Rafael Nadal in a thrilling match.
