Now it's official: No DTB player will serve in the main field of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal from Monday. The only DTB representative in qualifying for the hard court event in Canada, Daniel Altmaier, failed on Sunday evening in the final qualifying round against Italian Fabio Fognini.
The fact that the Italian had to go through the qualification mills at all is due to the strong field of participants in Montreal: only three players will be missing from the top 25 in the ATP world rankings in Canada, but with Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev it will be three potential players title aspirants.
Paire and Fognini in qualification
Fognini, on the other hand, is currently only 55th in the ATP world rankings and was number two in the qualifying tournament. In the final round, the Italian had to stretch against Altmaier, but ultimately won 6:3, 4:6 and 6:3 - and thus secured his place in the main draw.
Also in the main draw is Benoit Paire, who stopped Marc-Andreas Huesler in the last qualifying round. The French enfant terrible has fallen sharply in the world rankings and is only 112th. In the duel with Huesler, however, Paire showed a respectable performance and fixed his main draw participation with 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6: 1.
