At no time in the game did the 31-year-old Southeast European have a recipe against the Spaniard's powerful baseline game. Alcaraz meets Holger Rune in tomorrow's quarter-finals. It will be the first duel between two teenagers at 1000 level since 2007 when Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray met in Maimi.

About half an hour later than Alcaraz, the Dane won his match on Court 1 in the Accor Arena against the Russian Andrey Rublev, who was rated more highly, 6: 4 and 7: 5. Rune made it to the final at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Basel last week, but had to admit defeat to Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who was currently playing well.
