It was only in the semi-finals that the Italian Sonego caused a surprise with his two-set win over defending champion Hubert Hurkacz, now the 27-year-old has even managed to win the title at the ATP 250 event in Metz. The Italian prevailed 7:6 (3) and 6:2 in what was initially a hard-fought final.
After the 27-year-old had shown stronger nerves in the first round in the tie-break, Bublik's resistance was slowly but surely broken. The Kazakh also conceded an early break in the second half and then returned to his often unconventional actions. For example, when the score was 1: 3 and breakball against himself: The Kazakh tried to play a moon ball while standing on the net with the racket grip, even managed to do it, had to get the point - and still give up the game.
The decision in this game, Sonego safely transported the lead to a two-set success and was crowned Metz champion - and without losing a set. It is the third career title for the Italian.
