Hanfmann prevailed against the American Steve Johnson 7: 5 and 6: 2 and faces Karen Khachanov in round two. The Russian got a bye in the first round like everyone who was seeded, as did the two other Germans still represented, Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff . Dominik Koepfer, who reached the semi-finals in Acapulco a few days ago, is eliminated. Koepfer was defeated by the French qualifiers Hugo Gaston with 1: 6 and 4: 6.
Carlos Alcaraz is also out. The Spanish hopefuls lost against the Finn Emil Ruusuvuori 4: 6, 6: 2 and 5: 7. The 17-year-old Alcaraz missed a reunion with Alexander Zverev, against whom he had no chance in Acapulco. Lloyd Harris, who celebrated his greatest career success in Dubai by making it into the final, is riding further on the wave of success. Harris defeated the US qualifier Emilio Nava 6: 4 and 7: 6 (4) and now plays against Roberto Bautista Agut . For Harris it was the first ever win at the 1000 level.

Four local heroes also had reason to cheer: Frances Tiafoe (against Stefano Travaglia), Ernesto Escobedo (against the Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi), Marcos Giron (against Tommy Paul) and Mackenzie McDonald ( in a remarkable match against Vasek Pospisil ) moved into second Round one.
