Andy Murray only saw land against Alexander Bublik in phases in the quarterfinals at the ATP World Tour 250 event in Newport. The Kazakh, ranked third in the US state, defeated the fifth-seeded Scot 7-5, 6-4 after 1:47 hours of play.
In the second set, the 25-year-old, who was born in Russia, almost lost his composure at 2: 3 due to a controversial foot fault decision, but apparently drew more positive energy from the critical situation in the end than his counterpart from Great Britain. As a result, not only did the aces crash into the field, as is usual with Bublik, but also perfectly placed, brutal groundstrokes.
Bublik meets the winner of the match Jason Kubler (USA) against James Duckworth (Australia) in the semifinals on Saturday. The second semi-final was decided yesterday and is Maxime Cressy from the USA against compatriot John Isner, who defeated Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in three tie-breaks in the quarter-finals.
Murray will be at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Atlanta next week.
