Tennis pros can only ever play on those opponents who put the tableau in front of them. And so Pablo Carreno Busta at the US Open 2017 could not be turned from the fact that he had a uniquely favorable draw in front of his nose. And knew how to use it. Because in the first four rounds, the Spaniard had to deal with just as many qualifiers: Evan King, Cameron Norrie , Nicolas Mahut and Denis Shapovalov . Norrie and Shapovalov may be established in the extended world class these days, almost five years ago they still had to struggle through the qualification of a major.
In any case, Carreno Busta took advantage of the moment, beating Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals before Kevin Anderson finished in the semi-finals. On the way to his first title at an ATP Masters 1000 event in Montreal, "PCB" now had to take the really hard route. But the now 31-year-old mastered it with flying colors.
Carreno Busta against Sinner again in Cincinnati?
Already the start against Matteo Berrettini could have been the end at the same time, Carreno Busta won in two sets just as surely as in round two against Holger Rune. There were no problems in the round of 16 against Jannik Sinner either. Against Jack Draper, Carreno Busta started as the clear favorite in a match in Toronto 2022 for the first time, and he didn't let anything burn there either. The Spaniard only had to go the full distance in the last two games. And showed himself to be the better player against the slightly favored Hubert Hurkacz in the final from the middle of the second set at the latest. The salary? Pablo Carreno Busta jumped back to 14th position in the ATP charts, in the Race to Turin he suddenly has good prospects of starting at the season finale as he is currently eleventh.
But as it is on the ATP tour: there is rarely time to celebrate, Carreno Busta is even starting a double strike in Cincinnati this week, alongside youngster Carlos Alcaraz. In singles, he didn't exactly get it easy with Miomir Kecmanovic either, after that the next meeting with Jannik Sinner could wait. Once the hard way, always the hard way? Just take a look. At the US Open, the power density in the early rounds won't be quite as high as in Montreal or Cincinnati. And after all, Pablo Carreno Busta will also be set in New York City. So the qualifiers can come.
