It's actually astonishing that Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka, who have both played at the top of the world for so long, have only played four matches against each other. Especially since the first one happened in Madrid in 2014 (then Thiem won - for the only time). But yes: Stan Wawrinka had the upper hand in 2014 in Pais-Bercy, 2015 in Rome and 2017 in Indian Wells. And that was it.
Today is the fifth edition of the last ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the year in Paris-Bercy. And the signs are different than in the past. Because Dominic Thiem had to play his way through qualification and did this with wins against Lorenzo Sonego and Chris O'Connell. Stan Wawrinka, on the other hand, is currently trying to squeeze the last drops out of his body. A few days ago, Stan revealed to a Swiss daily newspaper that he was tired and broken. It sounded a bit like the Swiss legend was actually considering hanging up the racket well-deservedly.

Thiem and Wawrinka lose to Rune
There is a pretty interesting obstacle hanging in front of Thiem and Wawrinka's noses: namely a meeting with Holger Rune (and Boris Becker) in round two. Both veterans still have a score to settle with Rune: Wawrinka lost against the Dane in Paris-Bercy a year ago, and then told him at the net that he shouldn't act like a baby.
Dominic Thiem, in turn, met Holger Rune for the first time in Monte Carlo in spring 2023. And lost too. A revenge would be important for Thiem given the direct qualification for the Australian Open. Holger Rune, however, has nothing to give away: He is currently in the ejection seat when it comes to qualifying for the ATP Finals.
