Denis Shapovalov just doesn't want to work at the moment. Since his quarter-final defeat against Casper Ruud at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome, the Canadian has not won on the ATP tour - the switch to grass shouldn't change that at times. After the defeat at the start of the ATP 250 event in Stuttgart against Oscar Otte, Shapovalov now had to give up in the Queen's Club right at the start.
At the ATP 500 event on Wednesday afternoon, there was a bitter three-set defeat against the American Tommy Paul. In the end, Paul got his ticket to the round of 16 with 6:4, 2:6 and 6:4. The American now meets Stan Wawrinka, who won a thriller against Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday.
Cilic nerves of steel in the first sentence
Marin Cilic is already in the quarterfinals. The Croatian already had his back to the wall in the first set and was confronted with a 0:5 deficit in the tie-break. But then the Croatian remembered his strong forehand, but with opponent Bublik nothing wanted to come together anymore. With five points in a row, Cilic turned a 3:6 into an 8:6 and took the lead in the set.
The decision in this match: Right at the start of the second set, Marin Cilic should secure Alexander Bublik's service game to make it 2-0. Although the Kazakh managed the rebreak after a catastrophic service game, this shouldn't change much in the end result. With 7: 6 (6) and 7: 5, Cilic finally got his quarterfinal ticket. This one now faces Emil Ruusuvuori, who got the better of Jack Draper in straight sets. Alejandra Davidovich-Fokina and Botic van de Zandschulp also reached the last eight in London.
