ATP Queen's Club: What's in it for Stan Wawrinka?
Stan Wawrinka moved into the round of 16 of the ATP Tour 500 tournament in London's Queen's Club on Tuesday after a tie-break thriller. Maybe it will be something with a bigger title on grass.

How tennis life goes: Frances Tiafoe and Stan Wawrinka start together in doubles at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in London's Queen's Club - and lose quickly to John Peers and Filip Polasek. But so that the two have more of each other, the draw in the individual competition brought them together again. And the Swiss and the American made the best of the situation on Tuesday night. At the end of a true thriller, Wawrinka prevailed 7: 6 (2), 6: 7 (6) and 7: 6 (5).
Wawrinka is not exactly considered a lawn specialist, he won his three major titles on hard court (2014 in Australian and two years later at the US Open) and on sand (2015 in Roland Garros. After a long injury break, Wawrinka is only in position 290 of the ATP charts, he celebrated his comeback at the ATP Challenger in Marbella, the first win after the return was against Reilly Opelka in Rome.
Wawrinka served 22 aces
The performance at the French Open was somewhat disappointing, as the 37-year-old had to admit defeat to Corentin Moutet in the first round. How much is left for Stan Wawrinka on the ATP tour? The last title was in Geneva in 2017, he played the last final in Antwerp in 2019 - and lost it to Andy Murray.
Against Tiafoe, Wawrinka served 22 aces, which has to do with a strong day for the winner and a rather weak one for the return player. On the other hand, some of the paper favorites had bad days on Tuesday: Diego Schwartzman, for example, lost to Sam Querrey. Or tournament favorite Casper Ruud against Ryan Peniston.
Wawrinka's next opponent, who has received a wildcard for the tournament in Wimbledon, has not yet been determined: Tommy Paul and Denis Shapovalov had to postpone the decision in their encounter until today's Wednesday because of the falling darkness. The third sentence is still pending.
