When Rafael Nadal writes on Instagram that he has completed his first "light" training session on a court, that probably doesn't bode well for the competition. The Spanish grandmaster had to take a break for four weeks after suffering a rib injury in Indian Wells, and now Nadal will probably be working flat out on his comeback soon. Because time is running out.
The record winner there had to skip Monte Carlo, as did Barcelona this week. Of course, no one has won more titles in the Catalan capital than Rafael Nadal, namely twelve. Last year, the left-hander narrowly won in three sets in a dramatic final against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Nadal now has two weeks, then the second ATP Masters 1000 tournament on ashes begins in the Caja Magica in Madrid. Is this event too soon? Or does Nadal prefer to start in Rome anyway, where he can play under different conditions that suit him better than at the altitude of Madrid? Questions that only the boss can answer personally.
