As the player organization announced on Friday, from the season after next, so-called “Electronic Line Calling Live” will be used in all games at ATP level to monitor the lines of the field with a technological instead of a human eye.
"This is a defining moment for our sport that we did not achieve without careful consideration," said ATP boss Andrea Gaudenzi: "Tradition is at the heart of tennis and the linesmen have played an important role in the game over the years. Still, we have a responsibility to embrace innovation and new technology."
In recent years, the system has been used on a voluntary basis, but has already been used in numerous hard court and grass tournaments. So far, the technology has not been used on clay courts, according to ATP "final tests" were still being carried out for this surface. In addition to greater accuracy in decisions, ATP also expects additional marketing opportunities and the development of new game statistics through electronic line calling.
