The Swiss is the only player from the top 45 who is not at the start in the "Eternal City". The favorites are nine-time tournament winner Rafael Nadal (Spain) and defending champion Novak Djokovic (Serbia).
Federer will serve at the Masters in Madrid the week before Rome. The organizers announced this last Tuesday. Federer will play a tournament on clay in the Spanish capital for the first time in almost two years. The 39-year-old had won the Madrid Open 2012.
2015 last title on clay for Federer
Federer made his comeback at the beginning of March after a 13-month tournament break with two knee operations in Doha / Qatar. After his end in the quarter-finals against the Georgian Nikolos Bassilaschwili, he renounced further missions and retired into training.
Sand is not Federer's favorite surface. Of his 20 Grand Slam triumphs, he was only able to win once at the French Open (2009), compared to eight wins at Wimbledon, six at the Australian Open and five at the US Open. He celebrated his last victory on the slow surface in 2015 in Istanbul.
