Alexander Zverev mastered his opening hurdle at the ATP tournament in Rotterdam with some difficulty. After the disappointing last few weeks, the 25-year-old from Hamburg defeated the South Korean Soonwoo Kwon 6: 4, 7: 6 (4) on Valentine's Day and now meets the local hero Tallon Griekspoor in the round of 16.
For Zverev, who recently suffered a sensitive defeat against Swiss Marc-Andrea Hüsler at the Davis Cup, it was the first tour success against a player in the top 100 since his serious ankle injury at the French Open last year. Against Kwon, the Hamburg player continued to have problems developing his dominant game, especially during longer rallies. After 1:42 minutes, however, he converted his first match point.
There was a sporting drama in Rotterdam in the first match of the day. Hubert Hurkacz needed more than three hours against Roberto Bautista Agut to wrap up the 7: 5, 6: 7 (7) and 7: 6 (3) success.
