Shevchenko, number 57 in the world and recently starting for Kazakhstan, won 6:4, 1:6, 6:3 and made it to the quarter-finals. For Shevchenko, the victory over the world number 7 was the biggest so far.
“The best win of my career so far,” said a delighted Shevchenko. "I already had one against Taylor Fritz, that was the biggest one so far. But today is probably the best one. It feels sweeter because of the revenge for Brisbane." In Australia, Rune won in three sets.
For the Dane, the turbulent and rather unstable time on the court continues - he recently made headlines due to the commitments of Boris Becker and Severin Lüthi as coaches, both of whom ended their engagement after only a short time.
Jannik Sinner plays in the evening
Shevchenko will now face Grigor Dimitrov, who continues to be in strong form. Dimitrov beat Marton Fucsovics 6:3, 7:5.
Jannik Sinner, who was ranked first, will also be at the start in the evening. The Australian Open champ won his first match since his triumph “down under” against Botic van de Zandschulp in two sets last night.
He meets Gael Monfils from 7.30 p.m.
