Contrary to some speculation, Daniil Medvedev will play at least a few matches on grass. As is well known, the highlight of the traditionally short season on green will take place without the second in the world rankings, as Medvedev was summarily excluded from the tournament by the Wimbledon organizers in response to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.
Preparation or not, it is clear that Medvedev will start at the ATP 250 event in s-Hertogenbosch from Monday - and top seed. Incidentally, from June 13, the Russian will have this status at every tournament he intends to start in, from then on Daniil Medvedev will once again be number one in the tennis world. In front of Alexander Zverev, mind you, who will also reach a new career high in just over a week.
Medvedev and Auger-Aliassime threaten duels with the Dutch
In s-Hertogenbosch, however, the competition for Medvedev is quite prominent: After an expected opening duel with James Duckworth, it could already be against local hero Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarter-finals, a possible opponent in the semi-finals is the Australian Alex de Minaur, who in turn played in the quarter-finals against the US -American Tommy Paul could meet.
The lower half of the tableau in s-Hertogenbosch is led by Felix Auger-Aliassime. The young Canadian could also meet a Dutchman in round two: Tallon Griekspoor. A possible opponent in the quarterfinals is Karen Khachanov, in the semi-finals Taylor Fritz, number three in the tournament, or Jenson Brooksby could be waiting.
