Shapovalov was only 66 minutes on Center Court in St. Petersburg against Ilya Ivashka, who had worked his way through qualification and a bizarre penalty compendium in round one of the main draw. Then the left-hander left the field as a sure winner after a 6: 1 and 6: 4. Shapovalov took his opponent's serve three times and was able to fend off five break chances of Ivashka. In the quarter-finals on Friday there is now a real hit match against Stan Wawrinka.
Andrey Rublev had to fight much harder, most recently winner in Hamburg and quarter-finalist at the French Open in Paris. Rublev needed 2:13 hours against Ugo Humbert from France to finally win 4: 6, 6: 4 and 7: 5. Rublev made the decisive break with a score of 5: 5 in the third set. Cameron Norrie is now waiting for Rublev in the quarter-finals.
News from Sam Querrey
There was also news in the case of Sam Querrey, who had quietly said goodbye to St. Petersburg after a positive test for COVID-19. The organizers announced that the plan had been to move Opelka, his wife and toddler from the hotel to a private apartment. The Querreys apparently didn't want to know anything about it, preferring to flee by private plane to a previously undefined neighboring country of Russia.
Austria's double legend Jürgen Melzer is even in the semi-finals with Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The two veterans defeated the Russians Daniil Golubev and Evgenii Tiurnev 4: 6, 6: 1 and 10: 8.
