David Goffin celebrated his first win in eight months in Sydney

Eight months ago, exactly to the day, David Goffin showed a convincing performance in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome against local hero Salvatore Caruso. As world number 13. Clearly favored in the race, the Belgian showed no nakedness against Caruso and bought his ticket for the next round 6: 4 and 6: 1. What nobody knew at that time, from now on Goffin had to prove one thing above all else: Ability to suffer.

Against the left-hander Federico Delbonis there was a clear setback in Rome in the round of 32 - the beginning of a negative series for the Belgian. The 31-year-old has suffered no less than eight initial bankruptcies in a row since May 2021. After his first-round defeat at the US Open in August, Goffin finally pulled the rip cord - and a line under a more than messed up tennis year 2021. Goffin finally finished 39th on the ATP charts.

Murray and Karatsev in Sydney at the start

The start of the calendar year 2022 now, Goffin initially succeeded in anything but promising. At the ATP 250 event in Melbourne, the 31-year-old lost his most recent opening defeat, against Alex Molcan from Slovakia, the former world number seven did not win a set. However, David Goffin succeeded in rehabilitation on Monday morning (CET), against the Argentinean Facundo Bagnis the Belgian celebrated his first success on the ATP tour in eight months.

In round two, David Goffin, at least number eight in Sydney, is waiting for the winner of the clash between Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Federico Delbonis, in the quarter-finals the number two of the tournament could wait with Nikoloz Basilashvili. Or Andy Murray, who after his disappointing performance in Melbourne is looking for his early form again. And at the start of Viktor Durasovic from Norway, before it could go against the Georgian. Top seed in Sydney is the Russian Aslan Karatsev, who has recovered from a COVID infection.
