For Carlos Alcaraz, even before the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami, it was clear that defending the top position in the world rankings would be a Herculean task: the Spanish youngster could have won both events to remain in first place this Monday. The 19-year-old just barely managed to do that after a narrow semi-final defeat in Miami.
The beneficiary: Novak Djokovic. Although the Serb was not present in the USA due to applicable entry regulations, he regained the top position in the world rankings without a fight. The 35-year-old leads the ranking by almost 400 points ahead of competitor Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas remains third.
Behind them there are further changes to report: Daniil Medvedev has overtaken Casper Ruud and is now fourth, Andrey Rublev pushed ahead of Felix Auger-Aliassime and is now sixth. And Jannik Sinner has made up two places and is just behind Holger Rune in ninth place in the world rankings. The top ten is completed by American Taylor Fritz, who is just a few points ahead of Karen Khachanov. The Russian made up five places by reaching the semi-finals in Miami.
Thiem and Zverev lose something
Despite the poor performance in Miami, the best German is still Alexander Zverev. Born in Hamburg, he has lost a place and is currently number 15 in the tennis world. The next German is still a long time coming, with 90th place Oscar Otte also dropped a few places. Jan-Lennard Struff, on the other hand, has made up three places and is back in the top 100 in the tennis world.
Dominic Thiem is still not part of the top 100. After a disappointing start to the season, the Austrian continues to slip and is currently only in 111th place, just behind Daniel Altmaier (108th). Thiem is still the best Austrian in the classification, but Jurij Rodionov (120th) and Sebastian Ofner (122nd) are already lurking just behind. And the latter is also Thiem's opening opponent at Estoril's ATP 250 event.
