Only a third of the DTB players made it into the main field of the highly endowed Combined event in Madrid on Tuesday: Of the six Germans who started, only Daniel Altmaier and Laura Siegemund were successful in the preliminary round in the Spanish capital.
Siegemund, who was ranked 14th in the qualification, defeated the eighth seeded Russian Kamilla Rakhimova surprisingly clearly after 92 minutes 6:4, 6:1. On the other hand, Anna-Lena Friedsam was less successful in the 6:7 (1), 4:6 against the Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus and Tamara Korpatsch, who had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz 3:6, 5:7.
In the men's category, Hanfmann secured the main competition ticket with a 6:2, 6:4 win over Frenchman Arthur Cazaux, who is ranked 204th in the world. The number one in the preliminary round Jan-Lennard Struff, who had no order in the 4: 6, 2: 6 against the Russian Aslan Karatsev, did not show a convincing performance. Daniel Altmaier failed at the Austrian Jurij Rodionov 4: 6, 3: 6.
