At least since the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, Ben Shelton has also been known to a broader public: The 19-year-old reached the round of 16 at the prestigious hard court event in Ohio and beat Lorenzo Sonego and the French Open finalist Casper Ruud on the way there.

Immediately before the US Open, Shelton has now decided to pursue a professional career. The youngster announced this on Tuesday. Accordingly, the American is giving up his two remaining college years and will devote himself one hundred percent to tennis from now on.

He made this decision after consulting his parents and is now looking forward to the new challenge, says Shelton. At the end of May this year, the teenager had won the college championship in the USA.

Shelton will play his first tournament as a professional at the US Open, which begins on August 29. Thanks to a wild card, the current world ranking list 171 is saved. the way through the qualification.
